The above picture really doesn’t do justice to the chaos that resided on that bench. Close your eyes and picture 6 backpacks, 5 lunch boxes, Sunday shoes, cleats, flip-flops, sandals, and socks for two adults and six children shoved into that tiny area. It. Was. A Nightmare. When you walked in the door, if you didn’t trip over shoes and stumble to your death, you counted yourself lucky. And it was driving me crazy. The cursing had gotten out of control.
I told my husband that if we didn’t find a remedy before school started, well, it wouldn’t be pretty.
So, we went shopping. We found these cubbies that were meant to be bookcases, I think, and drawers that fit them perfectly. Everyone gets their own and it has remedied the dump-all-the-shoes-out-to-find-mine-then-leave-it-for-mom-to-clean-up problem we were having.
And hooks! I love hooks. Everyone gets two. One for a backpack and one for a coat. It’s lovely. And I’m not insane, which is an added bonus.
What is your solution for shoe and backpack craziness?

This is a great idea! The shoe by the door thing drives me INSANE! I do have hooks for their backpacks and coats, though. Great mayhem tip
Just spent 20 minutes catching up on your blog! I missed reading it on vacation. You’re a really great writer, Stacey. And, I know that my comment has nothing to do with hooks and cubby holes for kids…Zoe still doesn’t like shoes, and my husband would probably suggest something like that for me, as I’m the one who leaves my stuff all over the place =)
Thank you so much for the compliment. It brought a smile to my face this morning! I hope you had a wonderful vacation!
ooh i love it. i only have 3 kids who aren’t even at school yet, but i’ll keep that al in mind
I NEEDED to read this! We *only* have four kids, and the shoes are out of control. We just got hooks for the wall, but I was going to send out a desperate plea for help with the shoes. Now I don’t have to! Brilliant!
